Is the Iphone Boom a Business Boom?
Is the iPhone a Boom Business Boon?
Us We all know how the iPhone frenzy has caught the popular imagination since it was first announced in January 2007. With its array of interesting features, slick appearance, powerful computing capabilities, beautiful touch screen and intuitive navigation, this poster boy of the new generation of phones has captured the imagination of fans gizmo and technology phobic alike. To get a measure of the success of the iPhone, one needs only refer to (Tim Cook Apple's COO) recent statement at a conference – said the company had "great confidence" that the company reaches 10 million iPhones sold the end of 2008.
According to research by IDC, 70 percent of respondents who have, or plan to purchase an iPhone in the coming years, consider it personal and business reasons.
Given the enormous proliferation of iPhones in a short time, it is natural that those who are iPhone owners who want to extend their use to the companies as well. And it is a joy to carry around a Blackberry and the iPhone in every pocket. All it does is to exercise a further downward pressure on the belt. No wonder then, that the iPhone's usability in a business context is a power discussion today. That remains a secondary issue, because the fact is that end users current and future iPhone is seen as something to use for business.
The Bad News
Unfortunately for businesses, the iPhone was created mainly for the consumer market more meat, and never intended to be a working tool.
What obstructs the "iPhone for Business"
– It is mainly a PIM
– Part Third-party applications not supported
- No Exchange Support
Mainly a PIM – iPhone is primarily a PIM (personal information manager) capabilities (email, contacts, calendars, calendars, notes) and does not mean be used for team collaboration, which requires the ability to share and work togather on information.
Sorry third party developers parties – iPhone works with an operating system tailored to the so-called "iPhone OS, and now do not allow third-party applications to be built and installed in native operating system. Users are restricted to applications prebuilt into the system (mail, SMS, calendar, photos, etc). This meant applications special focus on any business can be created to make use of the iPhone and computer visualization capabilities and the ability of the Internet.
No Support Exchange – The most serious omission was the lack of support for MS Exchange, meaning that users could not see even the most basic business information – Business mail, contacts, tasks and calendars on their iPhones, which speak of advanced collaboration. The only way to do this is complicated and reliable solutions.
The Good News
iPhone's Business Friendly Features
– Safari Browser Rich
– Web 2.0 Applications Allowed
– Internet Friendly
– Apple's recent ads
Viva la Web 2.0 – The good news is that it allows a small window, through which an elephant could be pushed. Shortly after its launch, Apple announced it would allow third party Web applications that support Web 2.0 standards, to run on iPhone though its rich browser Safari. This effectively means that the iPhone could be part of the web 2.0 revolution, and access all the rich applications therein.
The browser Safari – iPhones Safari web browser is a full Internet browser with the works. It is light years ahead of the custom made web browsers traditional corporate handhelds as Palm's Blazer browser, the BlackBerry browser, etc. It is not only comparable to that of a desktop browser, but it is a desktop browser. The iPhone allows you to ride high in the current Web 2.0 wave, rather than being a spectator.
Ac strings to AT & T and Google, the iPhone generates 50 times more search requests any other mobile phone.
Internet-capacity iPhone allows access to the Internet via EDGE network or Wi-Fi throughout the area. An important prerequisite for a mobile to be an effective tool for remote collaboration is a willingness and comfort level of users to use the web access device. Without some thanks to the large screen and Safari browser, the iPhone has been a great success as an Internet access device. The iPhone has increased the average wireless data usage to 30 times greater than on other phones.
Apple finally wakes up from sleep – Apple has only recently been awakened to the previously ignored aspect of professional use. This was due in large part by the commotion raised by the media and users to their friendlyness frustrating lack of business. Even as I write, iPhone news is finally offering Exchange support and the iPhone SDK (software development kit) that allow programmers to develop applications specifically for be installed on the iPhone.
But these new developments are not only in its infancy, yet the fetal stage. It will be some time before these new applications find their feet, actually provide functionality without problems for businesses.
Exchange support at this time is a problem in full and only works for companies that support Exchange 2007 or Exchange 2003 Direct Push. Moreover, this and the launch of iPhone installed applications normally take place until an update firmware scheduled for June 2008.
Webapps to the Rescue: HyperOffice as a case study
Among the first companies to regonise the oppurtunity presented by the iPhone for business applications rich HyperOffice. Already experienced in web-based domain collaboration business, developed HyperOffice for the iPhone, an iPhone specific version of its flagship product, HyperOffice.
This allowed business users use the property of almost the whole of the right HyperOffice their iPhones. Rather than an isolated personal information manager, HyperOffice allowed iPhone to be used as a dynamic collaboration tool through which users could access the company intranet, share contacts and calendars, plan projects, share and edit documents, schedule meetings, and many other things.
They also realized early on that a major pain point for users looking use the iPhone for the company was the lack of Exchange support. HyperOffice allows users to easily get past this hurdle by acting as a bridge between Exchange and the iPhone. Allows users to receive information directly from Exchange, or access to information in Outlook (mail, contacts, calendars, tasks) to the right on the iPhone with or without Exchange. No matter where users access mail and other information – Outlook, iPhone email client or any web device, information is automatically synchronized. Users always get updated information.
