What is the best option for security in the router?

I have a netgear WNR2000 and want to be able to connect to my laptop and my xbox 360. I have a modem from Comcast and have been having problems with my connection to Xbox Live. I can play halo 3 in first place and I have been left behind like a madman (apart from the fact because it is wireless) and I need help with all the correct configuration so do not stay on Xbox Live too. Please help
