How to set up and monitor a network?
I have more then enough hardware.
I have three computers one wireless router, and a cable modem.
I want to be able to monitor every aspect of the network from my main computer.
What is the best way to wire the network?
1, the modem, to main computer, to wireless router to the other computers?
2, the modem to wireless router, to the other computers.
What kinds of monitoring are available for free?
Besides bandwidth, can I see what they are doing in a little window in realtime? history? what they have downloaded, or uploaded?
Can I set up a internal chat like winpopup?
there are programs that monitor keystrokes, but they are often picked up by antivirus software, make sense
there is no easy way to basically watch every time a user moves their mouse
However, u can use several sniffing programs to monitor network traffic. The most common one is called ‘Ethereal,’ which is free. The only way to moniter every website visited is configuring your network with setup #1. But be forewarned, ethereal is a memory and HDD pig.
For an internal chat, you may consider a network software called ‘novel.’ This has a nice internal chat function. Unfortunately, this will require some network admin experience.
if you attempt this setup, let us know how it works out.
good luck
