d-link wireless router best price
What is the best router to use for gaming, and general computing?

I have a bit of a problem in my house at the moment because both me and my brother own a computer and an xbox 360 (which we use to play online via xbox live). My mum also has a PC which she uses and my dad has a laptop which he uses from time to time.

I like to download, music, movies, games etc regularly and I’m also on my xbox from 2 – 3 hours every day. Because we have at least 3 (and sometimes up to 6) things using our connection at a time my download speed is slow and I get a lot of lag while playing on xbox live.

Please be aware that all of these computers/game consoles are connected via wireless and there’s no way my parents will let me drag Ethernet cables all over the house.

Can anyone suggest a solution to this? I’ve been advised by some people to buy the The D-Link Xtreme N™ Gigabit Router (DIR-655) http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=530&sec=1. Money isn’t much of an issue but I’d rather keep the price minimal.

Since no single internet connection is likely to run faster than a couple of mbps, a G router is all you’ll need for a long time. I still use the Linksys WRT54GS. I maintain websites and do a lot of downloading – while my wife lives on a WoW server at 60fps.

Faster routers may be nice, but you don’t *need* anything faster. (Maybe a Porsche can do 150mph with no problem, but where? All cars that can do 75mph go just as fast on a 60mph freeway.) If you were putting this in an office with 100 computers connected to the internet, you’d need something better, but with 6 3mbps connections on a 54mbps wireless router, you still have room to spare. (If you’re getting faster than 3mbps constant downloads, you’re lucky – you live very close to all the servers you download from. Otherwise, you’ll rarely get a download that;s faster than 1mbps, regardless of how fast your router speed is. An internet connection is as fast as the SLOWEST part of that connection.)
