Why won’t my router work anymore?
I have a cheap D-Link router. It used to work fine in my old apartment, but after I moved it doesn’t work anymore. If I hook up the router between the modem and my computer, the wired connection will work for about 2 minutes (I don’t think the wireless connection ever works), and then even the wired connection goes out. But my wired internet is fine as long as the router is not connected.
I talked to D-Link’s customer service for about 3 hours. They tried changing all these settings, and they had me download something (firmware?), but nothing helped. Finally the guy said it must be an issue with my Seimens modem, and that I should call their customer service and have them help me switch my modem over to bridge-mode (or something like that???) and then call D-Link back. I was so sick of customer service that I gave up.
So my question is: Does anyone know what’s going on? And, can I avoid all this headache by just buying a different router?
You must be careful when you move. You have a new provider of your Internet and they have different policies. You may need to call your Internet provider rather than your router provider. I’d bet they are keying in on your computer’s MAC address which is unique and would prevent anyone from getting to the Internet including the router and other PC’s.
