d-link wireless router help desk
need help in setting up wireless laptop?

I bought a toshiba laptop for my son and right now I have cox fast internet on my desk top computer. He followed the directions on setting up the D-link wireless G router but he still can’t get internet on his laptop. And now it seems to mess up my computer cuz sometimes I can’t get online. Are we suppose to just have the router on or do we need both the router and cox modem? Can’t afford to buy geek service from circuit city and we are not computer literate. If anyone can explain in plain layman. Please. thank you.

Yep, you need both the router and cox modem.

I apologize if you and your son know most of this already, but I’m gonna run through the steps here just to make sure. :)

The Cox modem should be plugged into the router via it’s ethernet cable (the cable that looks like a fat version of a phone cord on each end), and another ethernet cable should
be running from the router to your computer (each ethernet jack should be marked on the router, so you’ll know which one to plug the modem into, and which one goes out to the computer). A regular phone cord should be running from the modem into a phone jack.

Next, you’ll need to install any software that came with the router on to your computer. Once that’s done, make sure it (the software) recognizes your computer, and that the internet is working correctly. Next, make sure that wireless is turned on in the software (some routers come with it switched off by default).

Once wireless is on, this would be a good time to set up security for your network. To do this, go into Security Options (or something to the same effect) in your router software. I’d recommend setting your security to WPA-PSK [Pre Shared Key]. Set up a security key (same thing as a password basically), and write it down.

Next, get on your son’s laptop, and search for wireless networks (this is usually done by right clicking on the wireless internet icon in the bottom taskbar, and selecting “View all avalible networks”. Once it finds your’s, click ‘connect’, and it should prompt you to enter your security key. Enter the key your wrote down earlier, and then click Ok/Connect.

You should be ready to go then! If not, then it may be just be a few settings need played with and such (every router acts a bit different).

Hope this helps! :)
