How to protect the wireless network?
A friend of mine has a problem:
He has wireless internet at home via a D-Link router. But anyone who goes to his home can use wireless – that is, no security is enabled.
Even the neighbours can use the connection without having to log in.
How can a password be added?
(i’m not sure about the exact module of the router)
Dlink routers generally have a Default web address of http://192.168.0.1 you can login (if the defaults haven’t changed) using a username of admin (most passwords are blank) some use admin for that as well. Check the model. The Dlink site will tell you.
Login to the router, go to the wireless settings page.. should be on the left under “Wireless Settings” on the Setup Tab (at the top)
Change the following items.
ONE the SSID – make it something for you! Don’t leave the default!
TWO set WPA -TKIP or WPA-PSK (Personal) as the encryption type.
THREE enter a REAL password don’t even think of names, phone numbers addresses etc a real honest 10-20 character password!
(You can make a sentance you will remember – like “This is a DLINK router 4 my use and 8 friends only Stay OFF period” The use the first characters in upper lower and numbers..

WPA is usually “cracked” by a dictionary or known password list attack that wont work with a real honest password of some lenght.
MAC filters don’t work to well, anyone can read the macs being sent and simply copy them. WEP can be read by packet capture as well so it isn’t really strong but even that will keep all but a die hard out. If there aren’t many neighbors then issue is less critcal. Remember the signal doesn’t travel more than 200-300feet at most, so if your in the country or have lots of room around your home, its not really as big an issue.
The three steps above will keep people out WPA is very good and works when used as designed!
