How to switch connection from router to access point without disconnecting?

I am adding an Access point to my wireless network. I currently have a Dir-825 Wireless Router and a Linksys WAP54G Access Point. Plus all the computers and stuff. Note: The router covers the second floor, and the signal was limited in the first floor so I bought the access point and set it in the first floor to get good signal downstairs. Now how do I set up my network in order for me to be able to connect upstairs to my router, and go downstairs and the computer connecting to the Access Point without loosing connection. For example Being able to download something and not loosing connection while the computer switches from the router to the Access Point or viceversa. Thanks for the help.

I’m not sure if this will definitely work, but you need to setup the access point with the same exact settings as the wireless router as far as the SSID, WEP/WPA Key, etc., but give it a different frequency than the wireless router so that they aren’t interfering with each other. Then when you walk from upstairs to downstairs with your laptop or whatever it should switch over without losing the connection.

PS: By frequency I mean Channel. If your wireless router is using Channel 6 than make your Access Point use Channel 1. This should work, I’ve done this at our company, although it was with expensive corporate access points, not ones made for home, but it should be the same.
