linksys wireless router antenna booster

How do i improve a wireless connection on a desktop without a router?

Is there anyway to improve a wireless connection to an outside router in an open network ? The access point is at a neighborhood clubhouse, and im roughly a block away. I do manage a signal that alternates between strong to absent, and my transmit/receive rates bounce all over the place. This causes all sorts of greif if im watching online videos (hulu) or trying to play online games. Would an antenna “booster” solve my issue? I know all my drivers are up to date, im not infected, tryed swapping pci slots, etc..
Im running a linksys rangeplus pci adapter, connecting to a wireless-g netgear router thats some distance away, and even though my speed claims to hover around 6mbps, it feels like friggin dial up.
Any assistance would be GREATLY appreciated as Im throughly frustrated.

The distance is definitely a factor. Connecting in at only 6Mbps sounds like you have gone from a 802.11g connection to something like a 802.11b connection. Some cards can auto sense, if you have a g/b card, and when you are getting a weak signal it will downgrade to a 802.11b connection to ensure a connection but at slower speed.

You just may have to by some equipment to create direct line-of-sight wireless bridge from the clubhouse to your house to improve the signal.
