linksys wireless router as repeater
Mac to Mac wireless file sharing?

I’m trying to help my folks setup printer sharing. They’ve got a Mac wap (Airport? plugs directly into an ac outlet) that is getting a wired signal from a Linksys router. The Airport is giving out 10. addresses and the Linksys is the usual 192. addressing. So, a laptop with a 10. address wants to share a printer attached to a Mini getting a wired 192. address (2 diff subnets). Without looking in the Airport settings, is there a way to make the WAP act as a just a repeater/passthru (passing an IP from the Linksys) so it hands out the same IP range that the rest of the machines have? I don’t think the devices can talk unless on the same addressing scheme.

First, if the Mini is running OS X 10.3.9 or later (with the Airport update), remove the Airport hub. It’s not needed. You can connect the Linksys router directly to the Mac.

Now, (if I understand your question correctly) set each computer TCP/IP to “DHCP”. This will allow the router to assign unique IP addresses to each computer.

Next, if you can, connect the printer directly to the router. This enables all computers on the LAN to see and use the printer (provided all have the proper drivers).

If the printer must stay connected to the Mini then go into System Preferences>Sharing of the Mini (assuming that it is running some version of OS X) and enable “Printer Sharing”. This should allow other computers on the LAN to see and access the printer through the Mini.
