linksys wireless router at best buy
What is the best way to set up a wireless network connection for a Apple imac g3 computer???

I have an old imac g3 computer: 350MHz (slot loading) running the earliest version of os X. Not sure how much RAM, though I know it has no less than 64MB. I also have a linksys wireless-g router.

My main question is: Should I buy an Airport card (with adapter, of course) or one of those USB wireless cards???

With the Airport Card…
Do I need to install any software with it?
Will it connect through the linksys router or do I need a Base Station?

With the USB Wireless card…
Will I need to update my operating system (I looked at some that said a min. of OS X 10.3)?

In general…
How well does the internet even run on these old computers???
Are there ways to improve speed etc…???

First thing to do Click on the Apple Menu (upper left corner) => About This Mac.

You will be able to see, the exact amount of memory you have. Next click on: More Info for everything else about your system.

Next open a Finder Window. Applications => Utilities => AirPort Setup Assistant. That is what you will need to set up your wireless.

Yes I’d recommend you get an AirPort Card. You should probably go to an Apple Store to buy it. So you can be sure to get the right one for your system.

A G3 iMac is probably good for very basic internet stuff. Just don’t expect it to do everything a a recent Intel based Mac (with 10 times the power) can do.

OS X 10.3 Panther is a good OS, and probably about the most recent version you’ll be able to upgrade that iMac to. It might be a bit slow on a system that old. Make sure you max out the RAM before you upgrade. You’ll need it.
