Wireless Router Signal?

Just got a new Linksys Wireless G Router and it setup pretty easy and everything but my speeds are strange.

In my room maybe 2-3 feet away I get 18-24 Mbps Download and 2.-2.5 Mbps Upload which is pretty good, normal I’d say but my office is another story. It is next to my bedroom and I’d say 6-7 feet from the router but it’s separated by a medium sized wall. My speeds in the office are much lower, 2-3 Mbps Dowload and 1-2 Mbps Upload.

Is this normal? I tried to get a signal in my kitchen which is a few rooms away maybe 15 feet and it doesn’t pick up the router at all.
Channels 1 and 11 did nothing, channel 1 was actually worse… My office is the room next to my bedroom what is going on ><.

Routers may be good at several hundred feet but only get through one wall. Heating ducts, appliances, etc really cut down on the signal too, and then some of those older houses have brick walls which is much worse. I solved this by getting what is called a “high gain” antenna. I had to disable the internal wifi adapter and buy a USB adapter with a removable antenna. Then I connected this high gain antenna. They measure them in db. 3-5 db is so-so and probably what you have. 7db is very good and some go to 9db. This will pick up the weakened signal more reliably.
