linksys wireless router not working with dsl modem
Using a Westell DSL modem and Linksys router?

Okay, now, call me an idiot, I thought I understood how it worked, but I apparently I don’t. I originally have a Westell DSL modem, and wanted to configure it with a Linksys router to put wireless in my home. I’m not quite sure what my problem is, really, but, nothing works. I need someone to give it to me step by step, so even a sixteen year old can do it with minimal knowledge.

Westell Model: C90-610014-06
Linksys Model: WRT54GS
Oh, yeah, my computer is also running on Windows XP, if that’s needed at all.

You have to understand a little about routers to get this to work.
These are BOTH routers! Two routers on one network is not an easy to configure item.

The easeist way to get wireless is just use the WRT54GS as an AP and not as a router. Let the Westell do the routing.
To do this.
Connect the Linksys to your computer. (no other network connections)
Log in to the web interface http://192.168.1.1 Setup wireless SSID and Security settings you want. Then find the LOCAL LAN settings and turn off DHCP!. (you wont be using it). You may also want to change the IP for the unit. Say to 192.168.1.10 so that you can get to it latter when you reconnect the Westell.

Then unplug the router, connect the Output of the Westell to any one of the LAN ports on the WRT54GS (don’t use the WAN or internet port)
Connect your computer to any of the other LAN ports on the Linksys. Power everything up. Check to see that you have internet. You should.

Then connect wirelessly to teh SSID you setup in the Linksys you should connect and work.
Here is a guide for you.

http://www.skyprod.net/pub/HowTo/WRT54GWAP/How%20to%20set%20up%20WRT54G.AP.V2.pdf

Its a PDF so you can print and use it to setup, Not specifically for the Westell but still works.

Otherwise you can make TWO networks and use TWO different IP ranges for them Both the WRT54 and the Westell default to the 192.168.1.x range.. change the wrt54G to use another range like 192.168.10.x anything except the 1.x then use the WAN port BUT it will make two seperate Local area networks!

One other option for you. Login to the WESTELL, before anything else, set it to BRIDGE mode. You need the manual which can be found online.
Then setup the Linksys like the Linksys setup guide shows!
