What to look for in a router?
Looking to buy a new router.
Have had problems with the linksys wireless g brodband router (2.4 GHz)
We operate a business at home, so we have 4 computers that require internet.
We also have a Playstation 3 that requires internet to play online.
We need a stable, fast, and one that has a lot of range.
So far I’m looking at the DIR-655 (D-link), or the WRT400N (Linksys).
What is dual-band, is it worth it for my situation?
What specifications should I look for in a quality router?
Dual band is a great option, especially if you don’t want to upgrade older machines. Draft N is the new norm as far as routers go these days, depending on your internet connection speed however, they may be a waste of resources as unless you have better than DSL, the added speed is bottlenecked by the speed of the internet connection itself. D-link is good…but if you have had Linksys in the past and rely on static IP’s keep in mind that D-link uses a different address and you would have to change all the static IP’s on your equipment…not serious but an added step D-Link uses the default router address of 192.168.0.1 and Linksys uses 192.168.1.1 all equipment in the lan requires an address supporting that (ie. 192.168.1.101, 102…etc) Of course if you are using automatic DHCP this is all a mute point. But as you are running a small business I would think you would at least have some static IP’s (I know I do and have to).
