linksys router on connect?
so today my father brought a linksys wireless router home so my sister and i could get internet on our laptops. we have a main computer and two new laptops. I’m very mad right now because I’ve been on hold for a least 1 hour and a half. i called the linksys support and was on hold for 40 mins till i got to talk to someone. and then after we were on the phone for about 30 mins. my phone hung up on him. i just want internet on my two laptops. i put the CD in my laptop. i went through the welcome and the check connection stuff. but now on the part where i install the router it won’t let me. i put all the cords where it’s supposed to go and then i click next and then it says that the Ethernet cable does not appear to be connected properly. I’m confused! can anyone help me what do i do?
It’s initially easier to start with all the machines using a wired connection and then moving the laptops to wireless once you’ve verified the wired network is working. First, connect up your machines so that they are similarly configured to the diagram at the bottom of this page: http://www.pcweenie.com/hni/broadband/broad5.shtml . Prior to having the router, the high-speed modem (cable or DSL or whatever) may have connected directly to the main computer. If so, that should NOT be the case now. The main computer and the laptops should all connect to the LAN ports on the Linksys router. The Linksys router should connect directly to the DSL/Cable modem. (BTW, it helps if we know what type of Internet access you have. I’ve assumed it’s high-speed of some type.) It is possible, but much more difficult to route the Internet from the ISP’s high-speed modem though the main computer and from the main computer to the Linksys router. I don’t recommend it.
Next, follow the steps beginning on page http://www.pcweenie.com/hni/lan/lan14.shtml to use DHCP IP addresses (for now, at least). Test 4 http://www.pcweenie.com/hni/troubleshooting/trouble4.shtml and Test 5 http://www.pcweenie.com/hni/troubleshooting/trouble5.shtml should now work. If they do not, there’s not much sense going further until you figure out why. Once those steps work, you should have a working LAN inside the house. Next is to get through the Linksys router to the Internet at-large. Start by following the steps on http://www.pcweenie.com/hni/broadband/broad9.shtml The particular router in the example was a Netgear router, but they all should have similar pages and entries somewhere. The steps at the top of http://www.pcweenie.com/hni/broadband/broad10.shtml will probably not apply to you as most ISPs use dynamic IP addressing, but the tests at the bottom should work once you’re connected.
Once you have the wired network established and all machines can access the Internet, the Wireless network should be configured for the laptops. That is done easiest from the main computer as it will still be directly wired and unaffected by changes to the wireless settings. Start with the instructions on http://www.pcweenie.com/hni/lan/lan8.shtml (pages 8 through 13). That starts with an unencrypted wireless network and then adds encryption in a later step. The problem getting the wireless LAN working is that there are a lot of variables in play. It’s best to work with as few at a time as possible.
Hope this helps. Post again or email me if it does not.
