and on my main comp (desk top with xp) i dont see a password protect option and i tried doing it from my laptop (vista) but that didnt work.

help. thaank you

First of all, you should try setting up the wireless settings on a PC wired direct to the router, or you can use your laptop by plugging it into the router’s LAN port (um, at the back, but I think you know this already) with an ethernet cable – this is to make sure the setting changes will be done on the correct router. I had a friend change the router’s wireless security and when failing for the upteenth time (and finally calling me), plugged in her PC and found out no changes were made on the router, but on a neighbor’s (luckily it was someone she knew – hehehe, same person who recommended the router)

You can try this:

Once you can get online on a computer when wired to the router, you can configure your wireless network -

1.)Go to the router’s Setup page, usually its the 192.168.1.1, but SBC may have provided you a modem (Westell) with the same IP, so it may hasve been changed – double check by right clicking on the computer icon in the lower right hand corner of your screen (command tray) and clicking on STATUS, then click on the Support tab, the Default Gateway is your router’s IP; or you can go to DOS (go to RUN, type “cmd” or “command” in the bar and hit “Okay”) then type ipconfig on the command line, after hitting Enter, look for Default Gateway.

2.)Once in the router’s page, click to Wireless tab. Change Wireless Network Name (SSID) to something unique (any name will do, and it can be alphanumeric)- this is the name of your network that your wireless computers will be connecting to. Save settings. This’ll appear when your wireless PC starts to llok for a network to connect to, just choose this name and connect.

2.)If you want to setup wireless security, Click to Wireless Security which is also under the Wireless page of your router (a sub-tab usually next to “Basic Wireless Settings”).

3.)Select WEP or WPA (remember not all wireless computers can handle WPA, so I suggest WEP 64bit – so it’ll setup a 10-digit/character password; 128-bit will create a 26-digit/character password).

4.)Type any password and click Generate (if you selected WPA, just enter a password and choose TKIP).

5.)Copy KEY 1 on a piece of paper (this will be used by all wireless computers). WPA uses the password.

6.)Save settings.

Remember, it may look daunting, but you’ll get the hang of it. Don’t forget to take note of the changes so other wireless laptop or PCs can connect to the router once the changes are made.

Also, you can contact Linksys whose techsupport is open 24/7, their hotline is (800) 326-7114.

They’ve got a great knowledgebase, plus furoms on their website.
