My neighbor threatened to sue me for using her unsecured WiFi signal?
When my WiFi router broke, I used my neighbor’s signal for maybe a day or two until I bought my new one. She didn’t have a security key on it, whereas mine did. She had it under the general “linksys” name under the Wireless Networks locations. Anyway, she found out somehow that I was using it (I don’t know how) and now she is threatening to sue me. I did not know it was possible for someone to sue someone else over using an unsecured wireless signal, especially since it was only for two days. I have never used an unsecured wireless signal before (since I always had my own, and these 2 days were the exception) and she was so PISSED about it. I mean, her signal was UNSECURED. It’s not like I hacked into it and stole her security key. Can she actually sue me for this, or is she just bluffing? I actually had no idea it was her signal when I used it, I just used it because it was within range of my house.
As far as I know, she cannot sue you. She cannot even arrest you for that matter. And I doubt she has proof that it was you. It’s possible she knew someone was on her wireless, but not you. Do you normally get along with your neighbor? Because if you do, then she shouldn’t be so hard on you as to sue you. Let’s pretend for a minute that you two don’t get along. She could be using this as a reason to piss you off. Have you had problems with her in the past? Also, did you admit to her you had been using her signal? I hope not. Because if she doesn’t know who it is, it’s possible she is doing that to every person in the neighborhood to see who will confess. Some people do that.
Also, do not let her blame her mishaps and carelessness of not securing her wireless on you. If it was unsecured, ANYONE in your neighborhood could access it. For all you know, you were not the only one using her signal. Besides that, you used it for TWO DAYS. Tell her there were probably other people using it for a lot longer than that. Maybe she should be threatening to sue them instead of you.
I’d say don’t worry unless you get served with papers or police knock at your door. I don’t think either one will happen though. Trust me, there are a lot bigger problems going on in the world that both the police and courts have to deal with. You should tell that to your neighbor.
