Apple Laptop + Linksys WRT54G + Rogers Internet (Toronto) = Help Needed?
I have a Apple MacBook Pro (MBPRO) (2.4 GHZ Intel Core duo), with a Linksys WRT54G wireless router I just picked up today with version 8 firmware… I am connected to Rogers internet through a scientific atlanta 2100 cable modem and the internet works.
i can connect to the wireless router through a wired connection to edit the setup which I have changed the admin password and added WEP security… I can find the network through airport and the router accepts the password but I am unable to surf the net.
I have not changed any settings in Network on my MBpro….
Please help.

Hi thanks for the info… I am using the type of encryption you suggested… however I’m not sure where to enter the passcode? it seems to auto-generate a WAP key…
Also when I ping the router terminal gives me this ’64 bytes from 192.168.1.1: icmp_seq=25 ttl=64 time=0.989 ms’
and when I ipconfig it doesn’t give me a feedback for IP address or anything…
It sounds like the WEP passphrase is incorrect. Some routers support clear text alpha numeric WEP keys where more basic firmware use HEX hash WEP keys. If you enter in either the clear text or HEX incorrectly it may not work.
To get around this, use WPA-PSK encryption, the encryption is very strong (compare to WEP) and the wireless performance is 3 fold. Use WPA2-PSK AES and not WPA2-PSK TKIP. Then enter in a passphrase at least 8 characters.
After you change the password, you may need to change the password keychain in OS X for your network from the WEP passphrase to the WPA.
Also, once connected, open the terminal and type ifconfig and see if you have both an IP adress and DNS server from the router (the dns server should be the LAN IP address of the router).
Also try to ping the router in the terminal
ping 192.168.1.1
then use command (apple KEY) + “c” to terminate the ping. If you can ping the router, you are connected to the router properly.
I have a WRT54GS and it works great with WPA2-PSK AES with a Mac.
You can also try custom firmwares like DD-WRT to get better QoS and embedded VPN server and static DHCP, etc…
