Do I need a Static IP Address for Access Point???

I am having connectivity problems. Currently Modem to Linksys(Wired) to SMC Switch. Everything works fine with this setup no connectivity issue but here is the problem I am trying to setup Wireless Access Point( Belkin Pre N Wireless Router with option to used Access Point) I leave Static IP Belkin Wireless Router but not assign on Linksys Router. When i connect the Belkin Wireless Router everything works but after few weeks connectivity becomes issue with NO Internet. Can this be the problem? Belkin- Access Point settings Static IP Address and Subnet Mask Address. By default does Subnet Mask Address 255.255.255.0 change with new Static IP Address? Should I place next to Linksys Router or behind the switch? What type would be needed? Does Access Point need a Static IP Address(for troubleshooting-network and security settings)?
Please respond with right answers or if cant answer the question please provide website on finding solution to problem

Well, if it were me, I would move the Belkin Pre N router to the location you have the Linksys and replace the linksys with it. Use the belkin as the main router, many of your issues will be gone!. However, if you want to use the belkin as an AP only be sure it connects DIRECTLY to the linksys and not the switch. (All extra connections can create issues so eliminate all you can.) Yes I would set a static IP on the belkin, just set it for DHCP then log into it and chanage the IP (only the IP the subnet, gateway and dns will stay the same) to a static IP wihtin the same system settings. In other words if you pull a DHCP from the linksys of say 192.168.1.100 in subnet 255.255.255.0 use 192.168.1.50 for the static setting – it needs to be outside of the DHCP pool range of the linksys.) (BE SURE you disable DHCP on the BELKIN or you will have all sorts of issues!)

The static setting makes it easier to find from the network should you need to change settings etc.
PS don’t be too surprised that you have to reset the system on occassion – you are running TWO routers and that sometimes means rebooting the system to get everything back to talking. Every two to three weeks — you are lucky.
