Best N router for $50 or less refurb or used?
Hello. I just bought the Linksys WRT160N. Even after installing DD-WRT the thing barely works. I am unable to stay connected for more than a couple minutes, even right next to the router.
So I need to replace it ASAP. I would use wireless G, but I’m not sure if I’ll be able to get the full speed since my internet connection is 20mbps DSL. If that wouldn’t be a problem let me know and I’ll just get two, using one as a repeater.
I would preferably like to be able to use DDWRT, but it’s not necessary if the router is stable and fast. Factory refurb or used are fine. Any suggestions?
1) 802.11G has a maximum connection speed of 54 Mbps IF you are within 40 ft from the access point. The farther you go the lower connection speed you get. If you are 300 ft away from the access point you get only 1Mbps connection.
2) If you are within 40 ft, and you DONT do a lot of internal network file transfers and such then 802.11g is good enough for your needs.
3) 802.11n full spec supports up to 600 Mbps using MIMO (Multiple In Multiple Out) Multiple Antennas. But there are no consumer products out there that support the full 600 Mbps and consumer level wireless cards don’t support this yet either. If you get enterprise level equipment like the Cisco 1250 series access point then may be. But I doubt you want to spend $1000 on just an access point.
If you want N though here are a couple
a) Dlink DIR-615 (I personally have had bad experiences with 802.11n gear from dlink but they are cheap so you get what you pay for). Look it up on cnet.com
b) Also try craigslist.com under the for sale > computer section. You will probably find some good ones there.
After getting into networking I personally use enterprise equipment. They are fun to setup and more secure and reliable. But that’s only if you’re a geek like me. I love my 861w from cisco ^_^V $700 of networking heaven.
