How do i set up a password on my family’s linksys wifi router?

a couple of years ago i set up my family’s wifi router, and i was in a hurry to set it up, so i didnt put a password on it (at least im pretty sure). i just now realized this, and i want to put one on so our neighbors cant use our wifi. but ive lost all the manuals that go with it.

its a Wireless-G, 2.4 GHz, 54 Mbps Broadband router. Model WRT54G.
I tried following http://www.columbia.edu/acis/networks/aptnet/linksys/index.html
but when i type in ‘admin’ it denies me access, so i dont know what to do. Do i have to hold down the reset button for 30 seconds? what are potential con’s from doing that?

Boy, that’s a good list of the Do’s for setting up a secure wireless! Similar to the one I often post here, but with much more detail.

Regarding doing a Reset, the only negative is that you may lose some settings you don’t even realize you have. (By the way, you want to set up an Encryption Key, not a password. The password is what you’re struggling with now, but the Encryption Key is used to encrypt (encode) every message sent on the wireless network.)

Try other likely passwords, including nothing (just Enter). Also realize that the administration password may be upper/lower case sensitive.

But if all else fails, a reset is your best bet, followed by that security procedure.

Hope that helps.
