Sudden decrease in speed of internet by 850ms due to router. Any ideas?
My family has owned this Linksys WRT54GS (i think ver 1.0 since it isn’t marked otherwise) for about 2-3 years. We have an average of 3-4 computers going through it. A constant 2 desktops wired to it, with a usual 1 laptop with the occasional 1 other laptop, both wireless. We’ve had this setup/usage for the entire 2-3 years, and with our previous router too. However, just recently (the past 3 days) our internet speed has gone from 21ms to 864ms ping and 14.1 mbps download to .4 mbps. Any tips or reasoning for this sudden, dramatic decrease in speed?
Edit: already contacted ISP last night before i posted question, internet from them is fine, connected my comp directly to modem and everything was fine and dandy. After resetting everything and reconnecting everything ping is at 21ms with router, but jumps up after about 5-10 mins. Hope that helps clear some things up too
Disabling firewall doesnt change speed more than a few ms. Not the problem there.
If you have rebooted your router and modem and the problem persists, I would contact the Internet Service Provider.
Note: Some providers practice something called ‘trafic shaping’ whereby your connection speed is dramatically decreased if you ‘abuse’ the service too much by downloading/uploading more than the allotment given in the terms of service.
