netgear wireless router dns problems

by admin on March 20, 2010

My Internet keeps going out.?

It all started about two years ago. I got back from Paris and we had just been upgraded to DSL from AT&T. I brought back a wireless router and tried (failed) to install it. Since then it has never worked right. I currently use a netgear wireless router and it works fine sometimes, but it usually does not work. My computer says it is a DNS problem and I should call AT&T, which I have done at least 3 times and then the guy comes out and switches the filters on the phone lines and it works for a while but dies again. I got the high speed before hurricane katrina and it took them two months to get my internet back (I live on the northshore, so no water damage just lots of fallen trees). I am really getting fed up with this and can’t wait till AT&T let’s me tether my iPhone, which I am typing this on. What do you think I could do to fix this problem?? I have a black westell modem and a white netgear wireless router.

Are you running MS Windows XP? If so, are you using the Netgear configuration software, or the XP’s built in?
Try this 1st
:
1. In administrative mode, load a command prompt and type:
ipconfig /flushdns

2. In XP Pro, go to “start”, “help and support”, and in the search box, type “DNS problem”.
The list you get should have a list of topics. Go through the list one at a time and try the suggested proceedures. It will also help you learn how to diagnose and fix your own wireless config. problems, so you don’t have to wait for some repair guy. There are several dos commands that will illustrate connection problems, and fix them, e.g., “netstat”, “nbtstat”, “netsh”, etc. The command, followed by a “space”, then “/?”, will give you the list of subcommands for each. Windows help describes them in detail, also.

3.Go to “start”, “settings”, “network connections”, right click the connection in question, “properties”, “wireless networks”, and see what you’ve got there. You may try the network configuration wizard to reset your connection, e.g., change the name.
4.On your desktop, right click “my computer”, “manage”, “services and applications”, “services”, and see what you’ve got running, (or not…)

5. go to:

http://www.mycooltools.com

and download the free connectivity software tools. “whoami”, and the other free stuff there that may help you get to the bottom of the problem.

6.uninstall and reinstall the wireless adapter and DSL modem, making sure that the drivers are up to date. This might help with the resource allocation, (see #7 below).

7. make sure that you don’t have a conflict, e.g., the DSL modem might not want to work at the same time as the wireless adapter! you can disable / enable them.

8. try advanced system care, (free version), from http://www.iobit.com. this little utility might take all the “thinkin’” out of the task, but back up your systems just in case.

9. speaking of backup, if you have “system restore”. (XP),
(“start”, “programs”, “accessories”, “system tools”, “system restore”, try to find if you have a restore point saved before you had the problems. That would save alot of time!

10. What browser are you using? I use Mozilla Firefox and just updated to the new Microsoft Internet Explorer 8. These work well for me.

10. good luck! I’ll be waiting to see how you work this out!
