Hooking up a Netgear router?

My sister gave me a Netgear WGR614 v6 wireless router, but she didn’t give me the installation cd. I have never hooked up a router before, so can anyone guide me on how to do it? I have looked at Netgear’s website, they have down-loadable firmwear for it, but it’s just a fragmented file and I have no clue what to do with it. I have my computer hooked up to the internet and I want to hook up my dad’s to the internet. We have bought an adapter card thing (please excuse my ignorance) for his computer already (everything is downloaded and ready to go, I just need to hook up this router). Any help is greatly appreciated. If you need any additional information, I can add it.
Oi, I stupidly forgot to add details about my computer and internet access. The modem is hooked up to the computer by a usb plug. There is no ethernet cable hooked up to it (yet). We do have cable internet. And if you need to know what the computer is, it’s an HP Pavilion a800n, with WinXP running.

most soho (small office home office) routers are plug n play. doing anything advanced like wireless security requires a manual but getting online doesnt. unplug the ethernet cable between the cable modem and your existing pc. power down cable modem. connect ethernet cable between cable modem and new router. now power up router and wait a few minutes. then power up cable modem. wait a few more minutes, when the cable modems lights are all green, power up the computers and they should each get ip addresses and be able to surf.
this will be an unsecured wireless connection but you’ll be able to get online with both computers.
