Netgear WGR614v7 wireless router – NAT Insurance: What is it?
In this type of router, in the "WAN Setup" menu main NAT filtering can be set either to open or to the insured. However, I have no idea what the exact difference between these two options is. Can you please explain? I refer to a technical explanation, not something like "secure firewall NAT your network provides a higher level of security against hackers ". Many thanks.
Open NAT: If the router has no idea which team could be a package, it will be to forward packets to that computer. NAT Secured for: The router only forward a packet to a computer if it is certain that the packet is a response to something the computer sent. Here are some examples of the two ways that could make a difference: 1) You have multiple computers. Only one of them has sent a packet from port 8109. The router receives a packet to port 8109, but not an IP address either team has communicated data. With NAT open, only one team might want this package, so it will be sent to the same computer. Secure NAT the packet will be dropped, because we have no idea if any team wants to talk to that IP address. 2) You have multiple computers. One of them has sent a UDP packet to a IP address on another network. The router receives a packet from that IP address but not in a sub-protocol that includes, for example IPsec. With NAT open, only one team might want that package, so that will be sent to the same computer. With Secure NAT, a packet that is not part of a known protocol will not be passed, because the router has no idea I could do. To put it another way: Open NAT: The router does its best to become invisible and make computers work only all "as if the connection Internet was 100% of them and the router was not there. If you provide any security, completely by accident. Secured NAT: The router does everything possible to enable only the packets to a computer if the packages are clearly a response to something sent equipment.
