What are the major differences between a g series and n series wireless router?
I’m thinking of buying a netgear range max 802.11 n router and was wondering what the difference is between that one and a g router. Thanks
I looked this up. The 802.11g standard allows for a maximum of 54Mbits/s.
However, the 802.11n allows for a theoretical maximum of 600Mbits/s, though most routers only really support 300Mbits/s at the moment. The main difference is that 802.11n allows for multiple antennas through to use of multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) technology, and channel bonding where the signal can be sent over to 2 channels at frequencies seperated by 40MHz.
The biggest problem with 802.11n is that it’s not actually a ratified standard yet, but should be by the end of 2009. As with any technology that hasn’t been locked down, there’s always the chance of interoperability issues, though the chances of that are fairly slim.
