Cable Modem & Netgear MR314 Wireless Router Setup, How do I configure the Router?

I have contacted Charter Cable and Netgear. Both want to blame it on the other. I can get to the internet with just the cable modem connected but not through the router. I can see and access the router when it is connected. Bottom line, not internet through the router. Please help!

Well you do have to power down the cable modem when you insert the router – give it at least 60 seconds before powering back on.

So then you need to figure out why your connectivity is broken with the router installed. So you should have the cable modem connected to the ethernet interface of the router, and set the router interface to use dhcp. And of course configure the router to hand out dhcp addresses on the wireless interface.

Now verify that you have received an IP address for the routers ethernet interface, if so try and ping www.yahoo.com or similar from the router itself. If that works then you are halfway home. Now connect to the router via the wireless (associate with an SSID and authenticate), verify that you recieved an IP address and a gateway address (in windows just do an “ipconfig /all), and if so try to ping www.yahoo.com from the client (laptop or desktop). If that doesn’t work then you have a routing issue. Verify that the router has a default route (0.0.0.0) that has a next hop of the cable modem interface that it is connected to.
