How do I increase my wireless router speed! ?
I have a Netgear Wireless Router, MR814v2..
It says the router is for 10mbps, or 100mbps (I just set this thing up). The only problem is it runs really slow and when I look at my speed I’m only running 11mbps…
How do I make it so that I’m using 100mbps instead of 10mbps?
No I don’t have the manual btw. I got this from a garage sale!
HELP!
The 10/100 is the connection speeds for the WIRED portion of the router. 11Mbps is the normal connection speed for an 802.11b connection. It’s extremely unlikely that your INTERNET connection is anywhere near 11Mbps, so THAT should not be making your connection seem slow.
The first thing I’d check is your DNS servers settings on the PC. do:
ipconfig /all
from a command prompt. If the DNS servers is set to 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 check with your ISP to see what THEIR DNS servers are, and manually set your computer’s DNS server settings direclty to your Service Provider’s DNS servers, instead of letting the Netgear act as the DNS server.
Netgear is generally pretty, shall we say, “lacking”, when it comes to performance anyway, but again, for a normal internet connection with 1 PC accessing the internet it shouldn’t be noticeably slower than it was without the router.
You might also go to Netgear’s site and see if there is a firmware update for your router.
Normally I’d recommend seeing if your router is listed as compatible at http://dd-wrt.com but I know that the MR814 is not capable of running the dd-wrt firmware.
