wireless router questions?
I have a netgear wgr614 v7 router.
i use WPA-2 key to secure my network. The password cannot be guessed (its like f4t2y7k8). but one day i found that two more devices other than my pc were connected. I though that WPA-2 is quite strong but it was still cracked.
now i have configured my router to connect devices based on their mac address.
can this method be cracked as well. or is it 100% safe. is there any other method to protect my network.
i only connect my pc and ps3. i checked in the ‘attached device list’ in the wireless routers settings page. there i saw two more PCs listed along with my PC
Now i am using wpa2 and using a 10 character long password.
i have changed ssid and disabled ssid broadcast. also using filtering based on mac address.
that should be safe.
Using MAC is an additional safety feature. However, if you suspect someone got into the router via wireless, change the password after setting up the MAC filtering.
I doubt the WPA2 was cracked, at least not successfully. What were the two devices? was it a MAC address, or something in the DHCP status? It’s possible something “connected” to the wireless, but failed to connect successfully because of a failed password – only showing up as a MAC address somewhere, but never got an IP
If it was an IP DHCP status, then something did connect successfully, either by wire or wireless. if you have any other computers, it could be one of those? Did someone change a network card or add a new USB stick or something?
Good that you are keeping an eye on your security. Just doing that will help prevent unwanted access if you keep up on it.
