Very strange and difficult networking problem?
Let me lay out the facts and see if anyone can help me:
1.) using wi fi (g) laptop, built-in wireless, WEP security. at home, i have been able to connect fine for a long time and use router flawlessly. recently, i have been having fatal problems: i can connect to router w/security just fine. but it loses DHCP almost immediately. router is netgear wgt624 with latest software.
2.) my wifes computer at home connects wirelessly to same router without this issue.
3.) my laptop connects at work wirelessly with no issues, so it is something to do with my router
4.) I can connect and use the router with a wired connection just fine.
5.) At times the problems seem intermittent. That is, i can open up a cmd window and ping yahoo.com, 9 times out of 10 requests time out. Then once in a great while after fiddling, it will work for a while, then stop again.
Any idea at all what could be wrong? I am contemplating hard reset on the router to factory setting or replacing?
Router is failing. Get about two years on average from most non commercial routers nowadays.
I see it happen all the time, just out of the blue with zero warning. Replace it, they are cheap enough and saves a lot of headache.
