Problems Setting Wireless Broadband onto Laptop?

I’ve been toggling at my laptop all day trying to do this and I still can’t do it. I have a Netgear Router for my Computer for Broadband but I got a laptop today and I can’t set up the internet. Before you ask about the software, it isn’t exactly working, and I don’t think it has anything to do with it anyway. I know the username and password to connect, but it still doesn’t work. I think the problem is I need to add my laptop to my computer’s wireless network. I need to type in my laptop’s mac address, right? Problem is, I’ve already been to Wireless Settings, and there doesn’t appear to be a place to enter my laptop’s mac. Can someone help me from this part? I’m really confused..

First you must know what the wireless security settings are at your router. Specifically what type of encryption (WEP, WPA, WPA2 are typical choices); the preshare key (if you have forgotten it, it is very likely you will have to generate a new one and reconfigure all pcs now currently wirelessly connected); and MAC address validation. If MAC address validation is activated, the MAC of the wireless port of each pc you wish to permit access must be entered in the MAC address validation table of the router which is somewhere in the wireless security setttings page of the router. Remember it must be the MAC of the wireless port – NOT the wired port (a common error). [If you are unsure which is which go to the pc you wish to permit access, open command prompt (start, run - type cmd and hit enter) and at the > prompt type in "ipconfig /all" and hit enter. You will be provided info on all of the pc LAN ports and the MAC addresses which are called physical addresses in Command Prompt.]

Always access the router for configuration and firmware upgrade using wired connection not wireless connection.

Document in writing the configuration of the wireless on the router. Next go to each pc you wish to permit and configure the wireless port to match encryption type and preshare key. Remember preshare key is case sensitive just like passwords.

Each router is different – and we cannot tell you exactly where the MAC validation table resides. The MAC address validation table can be in the Wireless Security page of router configuration, or it can be in a separate page accessible from Wireless security page, or it can be in a separate page accessible at the same level as the Wireless Security page. Check the manual.
