netgear wireless router wgr614 v6 installation software

How do I set up a wireless network with my Netgear router?

I just set up my netgear wgr614 v6 router and I managed to connect to the internet through my computer, but for some reason when I’m setting up the wireless network to connect my laptop, there is a failure. It always messes up when I’m told to plug in the USB drive into the Computer and then the laptop. It says I’m missing installation software. Am I supposed to download something? Help!

Sounds like youre trying to let windows do it for you. Doesn’t always (often?) work. Basicaly its trying to set up a peer to peer network betwee your pc’s not the connection method. If you wire the laptop in it’ll probably work ok. Setting up wireless is a seperate issue.

Browse onto your router. (Usually 192.168.1.1 in your browser window.)
Log onto the router, username and password in the bumf that came with it.

Click onto the Wireless page and set up what you want. Give your network an name (SSID), pick an encryption method (WEP usually OK)

Type in a Key (Password)

Make sure Broadcast SSID is checked

Make sure wireless is set to on

On the laptop tell it to search for wireless networks
Select the name you gave, select WEP encryption, put in the password you assigned. It should now connect to the internet.

You will need DHCP set up on the router but thats usually there by default.

Once you,ve got a connection then you can tie it down, maybe increase the WEP encoding from 64 to 128 bit. Maybe turn off the broadcast SSID so noone else can see it. Maybe set the MAC address filter.

Also make sure you have wireless on your laptop and that its turned on.

Once the laptop is connecting then try the microsoft dongly bit again if you like.

Hope that helps a bit
