Is a plasma HDTV really that much better for watching movies/sports?

I’ve been leaning towards buying a 1080p LCD, 37″ Samsung 650 series, which has the 120Hz motion blur technology. I have personally seen the tv on display and everything like that, and i think it’s amazing with excellent contrast, picture quality and motion handling, etc…

My question is whether, for the same price, I am better off buying a 42″ Plasma – 1080p Panasonic G10 series. I have not been able to find this TV on display anywhere, which is disappointing, but reviews online make it seem comparable to my Samsung. (The slight diff. in screen size is a small factor, I’m more concerned about quality)

I will definitely use it for movies, especially since i don’t have cable yet (soon tho) as well as for video gaming (ps2 w/ component connection) and watching sports when i can. I do not have blu-ray yet, although the Plasma comes with a rebate offer for a blu-ray player making it virtually free, which is very much tempting me to lean that way.

Yes it really is that much better. The Samsung you’re looking at is of really high quality for an LCD. But it is a CCFL backlit LCD. That means it will have weaker blacks, color, and contrast. LCD manufacturers have tried to deal with this with the release of the LED LCD. But you will pay a steep price premium to go that route.

More comparable to the Samsung you have is actually the Panasonic TC-P42S1. That is more on par. And that would be a bit cheaper of an option for you. It will still beat the LCD on color, blacks, and contrast. Where it varies from the G10 (the flagship series) is in the contrast. You’re paying for THX certified contrast in the G10 line. Totally worth it for a videophile, but not for the majority of consumers. The G10 is essentially as good of a TV as you can own without buying a Kuro Elite.

The Plasma is inherently perfect at fast motion. It has a near instantaneous refresh rate. It doesn’t need 120Hz refresh rate, because it is inherently rock solid on that front out of the box. The 600Hz sub-field motion drive is something else, and more marketing really.
