Why Does The New Panasonic VIERA Have Lower Contrast Ratio?
I’ve bought a Panasonic VIERA TH-50PZ700A 50″ (127cm) Full-HD Digital Plasma TV. But for a while I’ve been wondering why this model has a much lower contrast ratio, 5,000, to previous models which were 10,000. I asked the store bought the TV from but they didn’t really know, just a vague guess. I sent an email to the Panasonic Customer service about two weeks ago but they didn’t reply. My question is why does the new TV have a lower contrast ratio. Will this affect the black shades, is the picture going to be worse or affected in any way? I’ve also heard about a Samsung LCD tv that has 400,000 contrast ratio, is this true ?
i asked this question a while ago but no one answered. Any answers appreciated.
Well there’s TWO different ratings for Contrast Ratio out there….
The one you have (5000:1) is what we call the NATIVE contrast ratio, and it deals with the Plasma’s phosphor sensitivity…..
5000:1 is some Super Sensitive Phosphor !! And that is what your really want is a Real good phosphor for starters….
Now….the OTHER contrast ratio is created by CHANGING the picture signal to “electrically enhance” the contrast….
It’s good, but you can end up with video distortion, because the picture signal is CHANGED from the original signal……
A show of hands here….WHO LOVES distorting their picture and sound signals???

Well…..Nobody raised their hands I see…
Dynamic contrast ratios will ALWAYS be 10 times to 1000 times HIGHER than the native ratio, so that SAMSUNG may only have a Native ratio of 400:1 at the very worst case !
And I wouldn’t want a TV like that !
You did good getting the 5000:1 Native contrast…..
Unboxing: LG HD-plasmatv (50”/127cm Bilddiagonale)!!
