Help with PS3 & Yamaha Receiver?
I just bought a Samsung plasma tv; a Yamaha HTR-6230 receiver; and 2 hdmi cables. I hooked the PS3 into the ‘dvd’ input on the receiver via a 4ft Rocketfish HDMI cable and the receiver to the tv via a 9ft Insignia HDMI cable. I am getting picture but no sound from the PS3… help?
That receiver does not process audio through it’s HDMI port, because it is an audio “pass-through” receiver: http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/productdetail.html?CNTID=5028494&CTID=5000400&ATRID=1020&DETYP=ATTRIBUTE .
To hear 5.1 surround audio with that receiver, you would need to also connect a digital optical audio cable (TOSLINK/SPDIF) from the PS3 to the receiver, and then set the PS3 audio output to use the optical port instead of the HDMI port.
FYI, most Blu-ray discs offer master quality audio soundtracks (Dolby True-HD, DTS-MA) in up to 7.1 surround channels, but a receiver can not accept that type of audio through an optical connection. So when you have a pass-through receiver, or an older receiver using an optical audio connection, you hear the backward compatible core from the Blu-ray disc instead. The core is the older 5.1 surround format used on DVDs (Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS 5.1). It is 5.1 surround, but it can not be decompressed to match the original master audio like a true HDMI capable receiver could do.
