how can i connect a linksys wireless router to my Windows Server 2003?
i have a Windows Server 2003 and would like to make it a DHCP Server to distribute ip addresses dynamically to Wired clients. I have also via the switch connected a Linksys wireless router WRT54G and would like it to make it an access point to permit wireless clients to access the internet through the server and also to acquire an ip address automatically from the Windows Server. Please let me know if i need to assigna static private ip to my router in order to act as an Access point?. This is my first time setting up such a connection. Please also let me know if i need to bridge the two NIC cards (one with the public IP provided by the VSAT Modem and the other with a private ip range) on my server before configuring DHCP or after. Thanks alot.
if routing and remote access is enabled on the server, it should handle the bridging automatically between the two nics…
Otherwise, simply turn off the DHCP in the router, have the server and all the clients connect to the LAN ports, and they will automatically get their address from the server. In this scenario, you don’t need to worry about the WAN port on the router.
But you might want to think about using the WAN port on the router to provide an added layer of security rather than exposing your server directly to the internet. You can set up all the port forwarding you need on the router.
Good luck.
