how do I set up a secure connection?
I got a wireless linksys router from my brother and it’s connected but I want to secure it. So obviously it’s 2nd hand. I’ve registered it on the Linksys website but after reading some answers on yahoo I can’t seem to find my “router settings” or set up “wpa” passwords etc. How do I make this connection secure? Like how do I tell my laptop that this connection is MY connection, specific to this router. (and my comcast bill, more importantly) Do I have to do it all hardwired first before I cable up the router and connect wirelessly?
First you need to download the router manual from their site. Then connect it with a cable and log in using your browser. Set an admin password, then set a wireless channel clear of others in your area, set an individual ssid and then set encryption using WPA or 128 bit WEP. You then use your laptop’s wireless utility to search for your network, set matching encryption and connect.
