Do I need a router instead of my motem to get internet? PLEASE HELP!?
I have a laptop that I JUST got and a desktop that is a 2003 model. The laptop doesn’t have internet yet so I bought a Wireless G 802.11 Access Point. The desktop gets internet from a Motorola Motem that has 3 ports, But all 3 ports taken up, 1 for power, the other is a USB which goes to the tower which goes to the monitor and the last goes to the network. So I tried disconnecting the network cable, then plugged the linksys cable to there, so the lynksys was connected including its ac adapter. The lights went on ( power, act and link) and were kinda blinking. Then we went to the next step on the setup disk and it tried connecting to internet or network and then it said, Access point Wireless G did not find a network connection. Neither my laptop or my computer had internet. I kept trying and trying, but never did it come up. So now I gave up and put in the old network cable and have internet again. Do I need a router since it has many ports or can I use my motem still and change i
You can use the Motorola modem with the laptop if you want to plug the wire into it…if you are looking to go wireless with your Lynksys G router, your laptop needs to be wireless ready or you need to have a wireless card if it is not. Make sure that from the wall you have the input into the modem and from the modem into the router. From the router into the desktop and if wireless there should not be a wire to the laptop. Set up your router on your desktop first and make sure it is working. You may need to reset your modem to make sure it is “talking” to your router. I noticed with my wireless G that the firmware always seemed to be outdated and what a PIA it is to get updated firmware.
Once the desktop has internet move on to the laptop. Make sure your WLAN is on and working and search for available wireless networks on the laptop.
Maybe this isnt much good info, but I have both wireless/wired in my home and it really isn’t super difficult to figure out….just make sure it’s hooked up right.
