Share wireless internet connection over ethernet?
Hi,
My main computer runs Windows Server 2008 Standard and connects to the internet wirelessly over a Netgear 108mbps router through an ASUS PCI card. I also have a second desktop that I use for testing.
I don’t want my testing PC on the internet all the time but I would like to connect it once a month for updates. I have a spare wired router and a bundle of ethernet cords.
How can I use this to share out my wireless connection through an ethernet cable to my testing PC? Both my PCs have Sitecom Gigabit ethernet cards.
The PC that I use the internet on is Windows Server 2008 but instructions for Vista are appreciated too as the steps should be very similar.
Thanks in advance,
Cameron Gray
Just thought that I would add that the router is downstairs so I cannot use an ethernet cable
It’s pretty to simple to share the internet through a computer’s ethernet port that is receiving it wirelessly, I’ve done this with my XP laptop and Xbox 360 before. Basically all you have to do is go in to your control panel > network and sharing (or my network connections in XP) then right click on your ethernet connection > properties > sharing tab > allow others to connect through this computer’s ethernet > OK.
Basically, what this does is it creates an IP mast that your host computer uses to distrubute another IP to a second computer; so after this, your host computer will have an internal ip 192.168.0.1 and the second will have 192.168.0.2 or something like that. I’m pretty sure windows takes care of all of that for you though when you check the box.
Hope this helps.
