wireless router best range 2009

How can I extend/improve my wifi signal at home?

I have a D-Link DIR 615 N router at home.
It sits upstairs in the master bedroom in the computer area. My room is downstairs, and my desktop PC is having a lot of trouble with the signal. I will OCCASIONALLY get no signal at all, but the signal strength is usually at “low.”
The PC is set up with a Netgear Wg311v3 802.11g wireless PCI adapter.
Also, I have a late 2009 macbook pro with a built in N adapter that has 100% signal strength, and it sits right next to my PC.

So, is the problem the PC wireless adapter? maybe the G adapter not syncing well with the N router? The firmware is up to date and everything. If not, is there anything I can do? Maybe something relatively inexpensive that’ll boost the range or something? I’m a poor college student, so a free/cheap solution would be best!

I appreciate the help!

It has to be the 802.11g adapter. If the macbook is ok, then it probably isn’t the modem, and the G adapter is less powerful, so won’t go through the walls and floors as easily as the N modem can. I have G modem to G adapter, and I have the same problem. Looks like N is really the only one that is good enough to cope with walls and floors. Expensive though.
