wireless router not connecting to internet
Do you need a router to connect a wireless laptop to the Internet?

I was thinking of getting a laptop soon, since this one is not portable and is about 5 years old. I was wondering if I need to buy a router with the laptop in order to have wireless Internet all through the house? I was getting mixed answer through google search, so I’m hoping I can get a simple straight answer here.

A router is simply a device that lets multiple computers speak to each other.

A “wireless” router is the same thing, but lets computers and devices with wireless network cards speak to each other.

To obtain wireless internet throughout your house, you will need:

1) A cable modem (DSL or broadband) and service (Comcast, Qwest, Time Warner, etc.).
– This will give you access to the Internet
– Usually when you buy internet service from an ISP (Internet Service Provider), they will provide the modem

2) A wireless router
– This will give your computers wireless access to the cable modem, which in turn will give them access to the internet from anywhere in the house

3) A computer or laptop with a wireless network card to connect to the wireless router
– NOTE: Just about all laptops these days have built-in wireless network cards

There are other solutions as well, but this is the most common and is relatively easy to install and setup
