Wireless range?
I have a shop about 1000 feet from my house. I’d like to transmit an internet connection from my house to my shop. It’s not practical to run cables between the two; the space is farmed with crops. If I buy a 700ft range wireless G router, a 700ft range wireless G adapter and a signal booster antenna, will I be able to connect the two points? Can it be done if the router is wireless B and the adapter is G? And is there a better way to do this? In a rural area, the initial connection is about $100 per month. For that price, I’d like to have access to it in every building on my property. Suggestions?
First this is possible in a few different ways. A wireless B router may not reach that far and a wireless G adapter won’t work with a B router, however a B adapter will work with G. Your best bet would be to get a G router or even the new N routers that are out with either a G adaptor or new N adaptor (use the USB adapters they receive better than the PCI card adaptors). A G router with a booster antenna I would think could do this however I would set it up so that it doesn’t have to go through many walls. There are also wireless range extenders that you can purchase however these can be tricky to configure and install sometimes.
The only other option I can think of is using a different firmware such as Sveasoft (www.sveasoft.com). They have firmware which allows you to modify a lot of settings including how much power the router puts out for signal strength. This software only works with specific routers however.
