How do I make an external hard-drive wireless?
I have an external hard drive where I keep all my music so I don’t use up all the space on my laptop. However, it kind of defeats the purpose of having a laptop if I have to keep it wired down all the time.
My laptop is a macbook pro. The external hard drive has a USB connection. I’ve been looking at several accessories, but am not sure which will actually get the job done.
* Apple Airport Express (This is my top choice if it does what I want)
* Apple M8799LL/A AirPort Extreme Base Station with Modem and Antenna Port (The one that looks like a flying saucer)
* Apple MB763LL/A AirPort Extreme Dual-band Base Station (The newer one that just looks like a rectangle — though the reviews haven’t been very good on this one)
I’m also up for suggestions on any other ways to make the external wireless
P.S. My wireless router doesn’t have USB ports
So, if you don’t want to purchase another computer and have it running 24/7, I would suggest that you upgrade your hard drive in your Macbook Pro to one of those 500Gb drives and store your backup files & music copies in the external drive.
Your right, the external HD does beat the purpose of having a laptop, that why we use them to backup our systems important stuff.
You might consider getting a small USB flash drive – 8Gb or 16Gb and store your favorite music on there while you’re on the go.
Personally, I do have a laptop but for home I have a PC running an Intel Q9550 with a 6Tb Netgear NAS connected to all of our computers.
